Janraisig Statue

Day Trips

Located within Gandan Monastery, the Janraisig Statue is one of Mongolia’s most sacred Buddhist figures, representing the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Towering at an astonishing 26.5 meters, this colossal golden figure serves as a symbol of hope, faith, and spiritual resilience for Mongolians. Unlike traditional statues, Janraisig is hollow inside, and filled with thousands of Buddhist scriptures, relics, and sacred offerings, reinforcing its role as a vessel of wisdom and divine blessings. The original Janraisig statue was built in 1911 as a symbol of Mongolia’s independence but was tragically destroyed during Mongolia’s period of communist rule. The statue that stands today was restored in 1996, funded entirely by public donations, reflecting the devotion and commitment of Mongolians to preserving their religious heritage. As visitors step into the temple housing this massive figure, they are met with the scent of incense, the flickering of butter lamps, and the rhythmic chanting of monks, creating a truly immersive spiritual experience.
