Beatles Statue

A unique and unexpected monument in Ulaanbaatar, the Beatles Statue celebrates Mongolia’s love for Western music and its struggle for artistic freedom during the socialist era. Located in a small park behind the State Department Store, the statue depicts the four members of The Beatles and serves as a tribute to the underground music scene that thrived in Mongolia despite heavy government censorship. During Mongolia’s communist years (1924–1990), Western pop culture was largely restricted, and listening to rock music was seen as rebellious. Yet, underground music lovers secretly passed around bootleg recordings of The Beatles, Queen, and Pink Floyd, influencing Mongolia’s youth and shaping its modern music culture. The statue was erected in 2008 to commemorate how The Beatles and rock music represented freedom, self-expression, and a bridge to the outside world. Today, it stands as a popular spot for music lovers, artists, and tourists, symbolizing Mongolia’s transition from isolation to global engagement.
